An accidental poisoning is a frightening situation. Every second counts. Stay calm and follow these immediate first aid steps to get your child the help they need.
Step 1: Identify the Signs
Symptoms can vary depending on the substance, but look for any of these signs:
- Unusual drowsiness or sudden hyperactivity
- Vomiting or stomach pain
- Burns or redness around the mouth and lips
- Difficulty breathing
- A strange smell on their breath (e.g., chemicals, gasoline)
- Seizures or unconsciousness
- Finding an empty or open container of a toxic substance nearby
Step 2: Take Immediate Action
- Remove the source. Immediately take the poison away from the child. If the substance is a chemical, put on gloves if possible to avoid contact.
- Call for help. Even if your child seems okay, do not wait. In India, call the Poison Control Centre at 1800-111-777 or dial 108 for an ambulance.
- Try to identify the substance. If you can, have the container, bottle, or a sample of the substance ready for emergency responders. Note how much was ingested and when.
What NOT to Do
- Do NOT give the child anything to eat or drink.
- Do NOT try to make the child vomit unless you are specifically told to do so by a medical professional.
Step 3: What to Expect When You Call 108
Be prepared to give the emergency dispatcher the following information:
- Your location and phone number.
- Your child’s age and approximate weight.
- The name of the substance ingested.
- When the poisoning occurred.
- A description of your child’s current condition.
